రాత్రి - పడుకునే ముందర , Nighttime - Before sleeping

చిన్నప్పుడు మా నాయనమ్మ పడుకునే ముందు ఈ శ్లోకం చెప్పించి పడుకోపెట్టేది. ఆ శ్లోకం అలా అలవాటు అయింది. దాని అర్థం పూర్తిగా తెలియక పోయిన, ఇది చదవటం వాళ్ళ మంచి కలలు వొస్తాయి అని తెలుసు. ఇది ఆ హనుమంతుడిని ప్రార్థన అని తెలుసు. ఆ శ్లోకం ఈ కింద చెప్పబడింది

రామస్కందం హనూమంతం వైనతేయం రుకోదరం 

శైయనే యః స్మరేన్ నిత్యం దుస్స్వప్నం తస్య నశ్యతి 

IN ENGLISH: 

In my childhood, my grandmother taught me this small slokam before sleep. She used to tell me that by chanting this sloka before sleep, you will get good dreams and bad dreams will not come to you. This sloka requests lord hanuman to give us good sleep with good dreams. Here is the sloka:

Ramaskandam Hanoomantham vainateyam rukodaram

Shaiyane yah smaren nityam dus swapnam tasya nashyathi\

Sweet dreams!!!

Karthika deepam

కార్తీక మాసం హిందువులకు చాలా శ్రేష్టమైన మాసం. భారత దేశం లో, ముఖ్యంగా దక్షిణ భారతం లో ఈ మాసం పౌర్ణమి రోజున కోవెల(గుడి) వెనక ఉన్న కోనేటిలో (చిన్న నీటి ప్రదేశం) దీపాన్ని ఒక ఆకులో పెట్టి నీటిలో వదులుతారు. ఆ నీటిలో కుంకుమ , పసుపు, అక్షింతలు వేసి దేవుడికి దండం పెట్టుకుంటారు. ఇది మన ప్రాచీన సంప్రదాయం అని నాకు గుర్తు. కానీ దాని మిగితా వివరాలు తెలియదు. నాకు మరిన్ని వివరాలు తెలిసిన, నేను మళ్ళి  ఈ బ్లాగ్ లో జత చేసెదను.

అమెరికాలో అలా కోనేరు ని నేను చూడలేదు. కనుక ఇంటిలో ఒక స్టీల్ పాత్రలో నీటిని నింపి, అందున నీటి పైన తేలే దీపాన్ని వెలిగించాను. మీరు కూడా మరల వొచ్చే ఏడాదిలో, మీకు అనుకూలంగా ఉన్నప్పుడు, ఈ సంప్రదాయాన్ని పాటిస్తారు అని ఆశిస్తున్నాను.

In English:
In the lunar month of Kartheeka maasam (one of the telugu month, which comes in November/December timeframe), it is one of the old rituals to leave a deepam in the small pond behind the temple. Put some kumkum, turmeric and akshintalu(turmeric added to rice with a pinch of ghee).

Since in America we do not have any ponds near the temples, I have done kind of like it at home, in front of the god's place. Took a small steel vessel and filled with water. Added the floating candle to it and some kumkum, turmeric and prayed to god. I hope you find this solution easier too and follow it from next year. Good Luck !!!!

అక్షయ త్రితీయ - Akshaya Triteeya

అక్షయ త్రితీయ అనేది ఒక పర్వదినం . ఈ రోజున చాల మంది బంగారం కానీ వెండి కానీ లేక ఏ ఇతర వస్తువు కానీ భూమి కానీ కొంటారు. ప్రజల నమ్మకం ప్రకారం ఈ రోజున ఏమి చేసిన అది అక్షయం కింద అవుతుందని. అంటే అది ఎప్పుడు తరిగిపోకుండా ఉంటుందని నమ్మకం. ఖర నామ సంవత్సరం లో ఈ రోజున అక్షయ త్రితీయ వొచింది. అందరికి అక్షయ త్రితీయ మంచిని తేవాలని ఆశిస్తూన్నను.

Alshaya triteeya is a auspicious day according to hindu mythology. On this day lot of people try to buy gold, silver or any other properties. It is believed that whatever we start or buy this day will become "akshayam", meaning everlasting, imperishable. Today is akshaya triteeya in 2011. So I wish you all prosperity and happiness which stays everlasting.       

స్నానం - Bath

స్నానం చేసేటప్పుడు ఈ క్రింద శ్లోకం అనాలి :

గంగే చ యమునే చ గోదావరి చ సరస్వతి 

నర్మదా సింధు కావేరి జలస్మిన్ సన్నిధిం కురుం  

మా నాయనమ్మ ఎప్పుడు అంటుండగా వినేదాన్ని, అలా ఒక పుస్తకం లో కూడా ఈ మధ్య చదివి గుర్తుకు వొచ్చి, రోజూ స్నానం చేసేటప్పుడు అనటానికి తరచూ చూస్తున్నాను. ఈ స్తోత్రం స్నాననికే కాకుండా దేవుడికి నీళ్ళు అర్పించేతప్పుడు కుడా అంటారు. దాని అర్థం ఏమనగా.... దేశంలో ఉన్న అన్ని నదుల నీళ్ళు ఈ నీళ్ళలో ఉండుగాక అని లేక వాటి పవిత్రత ఈ నీటిలో వోచుగాక అని అర్థం.

తలస్నానం వారంలో రెండు రోజులు శ్రేష్టం. బుధవారం మరియు శనివారం.

ప్రతి పండుగనాడు (అది బుధ, శని వారం కాకున్నా కూడా) తల స్నానం చేయవొచ్చు. నాకు గుర్తు ఉన్నంత మటుకు కేవలం ఒక్క మహా శివరాత్రి నాడు మాత్రం తల స్నానం చేయరాదని చెప్పేవారు. దానికి కారణం ఏమని చెప్పేవారు అంటే, ఆనాడు  తల స్నానం చేస్తే మనం తల స్నానం చేసిన నీరు దేవుని (శివుడి) మీద పడుతుంది అనేవారు. అది మంచిది కాదు అని చెప్పేవారు. ఇది నేను కేవలం చిన్నప్పుడు విన్నాను. అది కనక తప్పి ఉంటె క్షమించండి.

మన సంప్రదాయంని మర్యాదలు నిలుపుదామని చిన్న కోరిక, తపన, ఆశ మరియు ప్రయత్నం. ఈ చిన్ని ప్రయత్నంలో ఎవైన లోపాలు కనిపించినా, తప్పులు కనిపించినా సవరిస్తారని ఆశిస్తూ.....

The following is the stotra which my grand mother used to chant while taking bath/shower:
 
Gange cha Yamune cha godavari cha saraswathi,
Narmadaa sindhu kaveri jalesmin sannidhim kurum...
 
What this means is : may all the sacred rivers in India like Ganga, Yamuna, Godavari etc all are in this water for purity. This mantram is also said when offering water to god.
 
Head bath should be taken on following two days of the week: Wednesday and Saturday.
 
Apart from above mentioned days, head bath is done on all the festivals (irrespective of day of week) except Maha Shivratri. These are all the things which I heard during my childhood. If you find any mistakes in it, then please correct it.
 
This is just a small struggle to make our tradition, culture stay alive, even with the newer generations coming. If you find any mistakes or faults, please point it out, so that I can correct them.

పిల్లలకు సంబంధమైనవి - Children related

 చిన్నపిల్లలకు సంబందించినవి మన సాంప్రదాయం లో చాలా ఉన్నాయి. అందులో నాకు తెలిసినవి, కొన్ని ఇక్కడ మీతో పంచుకుంటున్నాను.

పిల్లలకు స్నానం చేయించిన తరువాత
స్నానం ముగించేటప్పుడు ఆ బుచ్కేట్ లో ఆఖరున కొన్ని నీళ్ళు ఉంచి,చెంబులో కొన్ని నీళ్ళు తీసుకొని పిల్లల చుట్టూ మూడు సార్లు తిప్పుతూ ఈ క్రింద చెప్పినట్టు అనాలి :
జోత పోత జోన్నారి పోత , (అమ్మాయి/అబ్బాయి పేరు చెప్పి) చుసిన వాళ్ళంతా రోత రోత
(ఈ క్రింద అంటూ పిల్లల  చేతిని దండం పెడుతున్నట్టు చేసి )రాజ రాజేశ్వరుడికి జేజ, తిరుపతి వెంకన్నకు జేజ, అలమేలు మంగన్నకు జేజ, పద్మావతి కి జేజ, ముక్కోటి దేవతలకు జేజ ముక్కోటి దేవతలకు జేజ, ముక్కోటి దేవతలకు జేజ .
లేదా ఈ క్రింద రాసిన విధంగా అంటూ చేతిలో నీళ్ళు తీసుకొని పిల్లల చుట్టూ తిప్పుతూ అనాలి
"శ్రీరామ రక్షా నూరేళ్ళు ఆయుష్షు "

Light - దీపం

దీపం మన హిందూ సంప్రదాయంలో చాలా విశిష్టత పొందినది.  దేవుడికి రోజు శుచిగా స్నానం ముగించి ఉతికిన బట్టలు కట్టుకొని తొలుత దేవుని ఎదుట నిలిచి నెయ్యి తో కాని నూనె తో కాని దీపాన్ని వెలిగిస్తారు.
దీపం వెలిగించే పద్ధతి:
ముందుగా దీపం లో వేయవలసిన వత్తిని తీసుకొని వాటి కొనలని వేళ్ళతో దగ్గరికి చేయండి. ఇప్పుడు దీపం లో నూనె కానీ నెయ్యి కాని వేయండి. వట్టి మొత్తం నూనె కానీ నెయ్యి తో కానీ తడపండి. ఇలా చేయటం వల్ల దీపం కొందేక్కదు(దీపం ఆరిపోయింది అని అనకూడదు, అందుకే దాని బదులుగ కొందేక్కింది అంటారు). ఇప్పుడు వత్తిని వెలిగించండి. కుంకుమను తీసుకొని మూడి పక్కల దీపానికి పెట్టండి. మీరు కూడా పెట్టుకోండి.
దీపం పెట్టె సమయం లో ఈ క్రింది శ్లోకం అనవలెను :
దీపం జ్యోతి పరబ్రహ్మ, దీపం జ్యోతి జనార్ధన,
దీపేన హరతే పాపం, సంధ్యా దీపం నమోస్తుతే.
దీపము కలిగిన ఇంట, దాపున శ్రీలక్ష్మి ఉండి
పాపంములు పారద్రోలి, ధనముల నిచ్చున్,
ఆరోగ్యం, శాంతినిచ్చి, కాపాడుము మమ్ము బ్రహ్మాండముఖి .

దీపానికి ఎటు వైపు కుంకుమ పెట్టాలి ఎటు వైపు చూస్తూ ఉండాలి అనేవి ఇంకా నాకు తెలియని విషయాలు. అవి సేకరించినపుడు ఈ బ్లాగలో మళ్ళి జత పరిచేడను.

In English:
Lights are an important part of the tradition in hindu religion. Everyday after taking bath, and wearing washed clothes, we stand in front of god and light the lamps (deepam). This lamps can be lit by either melted butter or with oil.
Lighting lamps :
First straigten the ends of the cotton threads(Vatti-in telugu) which we keep to light the lamps. Put it in the deepam samidha(this is where in which lit the lamp). Now add either melted butter or oil to it. Soak the cotton totally so that it does not turn off as soon as it is lit. Now lit the lamp with match stick or lighter. Take kumkum and put it three other sides of the deepam.
The following sloka should be told while lighting the lamps (especially in the evening):
Deepam jyothi parahbrahma, deepam jyothi janardhana
deepena harathe paapam, sandhya deepam namosthute.
Deepamu kaligina inta, daapuna srilakshmi undi,
paapammulu paara droli, dhanamula nicchun,
aarogyam, shaanthinicchi, kaapaadumu mammu brahmanda mukhi.

 ఈ రోజు ఈ కొత్త label ని ఈ బ్లాగలో కలుపుతున్నాను. ఈ కొత్త దాంట్లో మన రోజు వారి చిన్న చిన్న పద్దతులు, శ్లోకాలు మరియు మన సాంప్రదాయం గురించి రాయాలని కోరిక కనపరుస్తున్నాను. ఈ కొత్త label కూడా అందరు ఆనందిస్తారని ఆశిస్తున్న.
